Cellphones
There 6,700,000,000 people living on Planet Earth. There are about 2,500,000,000 cellphones. That's almost every 40 in 100 people have a cellphone. Given what you can do on cellphones these days - that's a lot of connectedness. There 2,200,000 cellphones in Haiti - out of a population of 8,924,553. Or another way to look at it is 24% of Haiti's populations owns cellphones - 25 out of 100. For a country with so many people lacking in the basic necessities of life. This number was surprising high to me. It may be an opportunity.
Land Line Phones
There are far fewer telephone land line in Haiti then cellphones. Only 150,000- almost 2 for every 100 people own a land line telephone.
A village of 100 citizens representing the world would have 14 telephones.
Internet Users
1,000,000 people use the Internet in Haiti. That's one in nine people who are connected. There are 7 Internet hosts and 2 ISP's.
Television
There are 38,000 televisions in Haiti. Or 4 tv's in every 1000 people.
If the world was represented as a village of 100 citizens there would be 24 televisions.
Radio
There are 415,000 radios in Haiti. Or approximately 5 radios for every 100 people.
If the world was represented as a village of 100 there would be 42 radios.
Computers
There are seven computers per every 100 people on the planet. I don't know how many computers thee are in Haiti. We know there are 1,000 Internet users, but many of them may be sharing computers. To run computers, you need electricity.
Electricity
If the world were a village of 100 - 76 would have electricity - 24 would not.
We have learned from our partners who have traveled to Haiti, that electricity is in great demand. Many of the orphanages simply do not have power. We are working with members of Engineers Without Borders to help bring solar power to these villages.
Most of Haiti uses fossil fuel for power. 60%. The majority of the remaining power comes from hydro - water. Haiti has no oil production and no nuclear power.
